Dawn stepped gingerly over the shattered glass of the front window of the Whole Foods and into the grocery store. It smelled like singed arugula lettuce and scorched goat cheese, even though the store itself had not been torched like most of the other buildings on the street had been. But it had been looted, and thoroughly. There were a few other folks inside, like Dawn walking down the aisles looking for anything left after the shelves had been picked clean. Nothing, not even a can of mung beans.
She felt the panic rising inside herâwhat were her kids going to eat? It had been weeks since this all started. The mayor had gone on TV, looking like a bizarre alien as usual, and announced that Chicago would follow the example of the East and West Coasts and âconsciously uncouple ourselves from the racist, sexist, and transphobic reactionary government in Washington.â She promised there would be no violence if the federal government did not start any, and that a new day of progressive government had come.
Dawn was initially happy about itâshe hated the Republicans, having never once voted for one, and it seemed that this might be the only thing to do under the circumstances. After all, DeSantis had come to power in what was clearly a rigged electionâMaddow had reported how the GOP was not only suppressing voters of color but was actively rewiring voting machinesâand he immediately began firing loyal public servants like the FBI director, many generals, and Dr. Fauci. The Republicans were even going to pass a law banning teaching critical race theory, which was vitally important to teach, though it was not actually taught in schools.
Was mandatory evangelical Christianity next? Maddow thought so, and she was never wrong, according to Maddow.
But the worst thing was his pardon of all the insurrectionists of January 6. DeSantis was literally guilty of treason, and it was only right that the progressive states rebelled against the deplorable and primitive red ones.
The protests had started after DeSantis targeted Chicago for a blockade. The streets were packed with marchers marching against the man in Washington, D.C. âWe are all in this struggle together!â the mayor had promised, and kept promising as food supplies dwindled. The mayor never looked any thinner, but Dawn did every time she glanced in the mirror in her townhouse.
The protests against DeSantis continued every day, and there was soon looting and burning. âItâs merely property damage, and thatâs not really violence,â Dawn told herself, but she never went outside or let her kids out either. During the state of emergency, school was by distance learning until the power went out. Then there was nothingâno internet, no news, nothing. The kids were scared, especially when they smelled smoke. But Dawn, even as she reassured herself that she remained in solidarity with the protestors, bolted her door. The heat was off, and they all slept together in her bed wearing sweaters to keep warm.
Dawn caught a glint from between the slats of the shelves and knelt, careful to avoid the gooey liquids pooled on the linoleum.
